STORMY BUSINESS
NOW STANDING AT THE OSBORNE FARM IN CAMBRIDGE
MINNESOTA

"It's not often a horse comes along that can go short, long, last for a 4 year career
and have the heart to compete in every stakes race he was entered in, winning them
3 different times. Stormy Business was just such a colt."

Stormy Business and the Depth of His Pedigree > Link to 5 generation pedigree >

With every mare or grand mare producing a stakes winner, and every
sire or grand sire being a stakes winner, Stormy Business has a
knockout pedigree. While many people quickly look at a pedigree
and simply reflect on a strong sire or two, great pedigrees are
determined by understanding how a horse may have been bred
and the capability of
every horse  that went into producing a foal.
Serious analysts look for gaps or holes in a pedigree.

While recent generations are outstanding, let's look even deeper
into the pedigree. For example, every horse has exactly 8 fourth
generation sires and we started to wonder how “Stormy Business”
went  8 for 8 with, not good, but legendary sires in his pedigree?
(See the chart to the right.) The answer…... He was bred
by the outstanding Evans breeding family. Edward Evans, whose
father bred Pleasant Colony, bred such horses as Saint Liam and
many other Breeders Cup horses. He was named the outstanding
breeder by the New York Turf Writers Association in 2002, the
same year Stormy Business was born!

Of course, with 3rd generation sires Storm Bird, Mr. Prospector
and Pleasant Colony, as well as the 2nd generation impacts of
Storm Cat, Colonial Affair and 2nd Dam Avowal, it is clear that
Stormy Business comes from a tremendous hand picked bloodline.

"Facts are stubborn things."
That most people begin
as owners in the
claiming game. While
claiming is great fun,
and gets new owners
right into the action,
there are some things
new owners who claim
must know.

First, don't kid
yourself and think the
simple analysis of past
performances will be
the key to success.
Everyone can see what
you see and don't think
you're smarter than
others who have been
at it for years.

The real key is to
hook up with a trainer
who has proven
success at improving
horses
after claims.
Don't take their word,
or some goofy advisors
word, in this regard.
Evaluate the data
yourself by looking at
all of their claims and
simply checking running
lines before and after
their claims.

Not all trainers know
how to effectively
maintain older claiming
horses, or have learned
the tricks of the trade.
There are many tricks
including veterinary
techniques, horse
maintainence methods
and even feed and
supplement use.

While we have had fun
claiming, we eventually
realized that the
possibility of having
stakes winners was
extraordinarily slim in
the claiming game. We
found that the
satisfaction of buying
young horses, and
breeding our own, was
without compare.
