We have had many great moments in the sport we love. Over the past 5 years we have purchased 12 two year olds from 2 year olds in training sales. All of these horses have not only raced but all of them have won. Did you know that only 71% of all thoroughbreds ever run a race and only 48.1% ever win? Our 2005 and 2008 campaigns provided 3 different 2 year old stakes champions. Timetobook was the Iowa 2 year old champion in 2005 and The KB Kid took those same honors in Minnesota that year. That had never occurred in the history of Iowa and Minnesota racing and both horses were the only 2 horses we purchased at the Iowa two year old in training sale that year! Ice Rocket was also named the top 2 year old colt in Minnesota in 2008. Considering there are near 300 Iowa and Minnesota bred colts born every year and the fact that many people who have been in the business for over 30 years have never had a 2 year old state champion, our top result of owning three 2 year old champions in this 4 year period is significant and supports our unique approach to thoroughbred selection. Our unique selection criteria, and analysis techniques, have allowed us to identify bargains and discreetly claim or purchase low cost individuals who quickly produce earnings well beyond the purchase price. ( Timetobook, Demiparfait, The KB Kid, Ice Rocket, Supreme Warrior, Blue Dancer, CC Tat, Oriental Tara, etc.) We specialize in local Midwest racing and have been listed on the Canterbury Park top owner listings since 2005. Unlike others in the thoroughbred industry, our entry into the business was not based upon long worn out traditions, history or theory. Instead, we applied proven business solutions to the massive amounts of data available. As a result, we were able to use things like industrial calibration tools to analyze race, not just pretty, conformation. We also constantly download massive amounts of historical data which provides a private basis for our pedigree cross evaluation system. This statistical system removes anecdotal information, and emotions, from our system for buying and breeding thoroughbreds. In 2011 we will start to see what results from our Stormy Business breeding program where we selected mares to specifically breed to him. This year, in 2010, we expect our total lifetime race earnings to exceed the one million dollar mark and we now have 55 lifetime wins and 186 in the money finishes.
Did You Know?
That there were 74 HIPS in the 2008 MTA yearling sale. Only 13 of the 74 yearlings were out of a stakes placed or stakes winning broodmare. Of those 13 yearlings, only 7 were actual stakes winners and of those 7, only 1 was both a stakes winner and a stakes winning producer. Her name was Belle of the Night and the stakes winner she produced was Demiparfait, our broodmare. In other words, only 17.6% of the consigned yearlings came out of mares with some degree of stakes level success. Only 9.5% were out of stakes winners and only 1.4% had both won a stakes race themselves and produced a baby that had won a stakes race. Many breeders fail to realize that half of the characteristics of the resultant foal are contributed by the dam regardless of the the sire. While fashionable sires, mating decisions and nicking are important when breeding, consistently successful breeders understand stakes performing mares are essential.

Astar Thoroughbreds, LLC is a Minnesota based Limited Liability Company. With years of experience working as a Chief Operating Officer for some of the largest employers in the country, David Astar decided to leave the business world and begin applying statistical theory and analysis techniques to horse racing in 2005. He and his wife Debbie, a former Partner in a Pension Firm, created Astar Thoroughbreds, LLC to focus on racing and breeding thoroughbreds. Today, the Astars are constantly improving unique pedigree, nicking and conformational calibration tools that have allowed them to uncover hidden thoroughbred opportunities. They own an exciting new Minnesota stallion, "Stormy Business", and maintain their own farm while also working with many farm partners, trainers, veterinarians, breeding facilities, riders and racetrack professionals focusing on Midwest racing opportunities.
